Trigger Warning: Rape
Yesterday I posted the first review of a 3 part mini web series called “Lauren” which details a case of rape in the army. Here is episode two:
The Episode starts off with Sergeant Lauren shooting a firearm and flaring her nostrils, obviously very engaged, possibly angry. It sets the tone for the rest of the video, which can be seen within the scenes between herself and Captain Masters (played by Navi Rawat)
This second video stresses how during these types of investigations they scrutinize every aspect of the person who was assaulted. They question alcohol use, hobbies, sexual activity, anything at all that could cast an obscure light onto their character.
Captain Masters’ character immediately invokes a dislike, and honestly within these two first videos, I appreciate the two characters that are pounding against Lauren’s case are both women. It would be so easy to dismiss such conduct against her if done by men (men, what do they know about this, amirite?) I feel like facing Lauren against such strong characters such as Major Stone and Captain Masters invokes a subtle truth within the service that women have no advocates in cases like this. Most would assume that another female would be on their side, but it is such a sad, sad, sad fact that you are immediately ostracized and disbelieved even by your same sex.
This episode is where Troian Bellsario’s character really begins to take substance for me. While the captain is badgering her and supporting the patriarchy (YOU WILL RUIN THESE MEN’S CAREERS) She breaks in with “They raped me!” In the service we so often get caught up in what people will think, the families, the news…. fuck that. WHAT ABOUT THE WOMEN WHO WERE RAPED?
Also one last thing noted in the final scene: Rank has a lot of weight in situations, which is so wrong, but I have seen it so many times in different ways that I’m growing disillusioned.
